Detox Cabbage Soup for a New Year

Hello 2023!!!  Helloooo Detox Cabbage Soup!

Usually, I post this favorite New Year recipe on January 1 or close to it.  For whatever reason, I wasn’t ready to turn my back on all the holiday festive foods quite so quickly this year.  But I’m ready now!

I put a pot of this soup on the stove today as I started to declutter the house of ornaments, garland, and Christmas snow globes.  It feels so good to get as clean and healthy on the inside as it does on the outside! I highly recommend this cabbage detox soup on to keep you warm, energized, and toasty.

And if you like this one, you’ll also love this cleansing leek soup. It was featured on Emily in Paris and it’s been a huge hit. It’s mild yet still very satisfying.

How to Make Fat-Burning Detox Cabbage Soup

This cabbage soup recipe is easy to make and is hearty enough to keep you going on the coldest days.  It’s low carb and gluten free.  Top it off at the end with a little lemon juice to really brighten it up!

Heat 3 tablespoon oil over medium heat in a soup pot and sweat the following vegetables and spices in 2 tablespoons olive oil.  Careful not to brown them, just cook them until they’re tender.

Then add:

Simmer (do not boil) until the cabbage is tender, about 2-3 hours.  Then add a mix of 1/2 cup fresh chopped herbs.  I like Italian parsley, thyme and oregano.  Then squeeze in a 1/2 of lemon to brighten it up and add more salt if you think it needs it.

Optional:  If you like garlic, chopped up 2-3 cloves and add them right before the cabbage for 2-3 minutes.  Other optional veggies to include are: 1 cup green beans, 2 cups spinach, and purple cabbage.  If you don’t have diced tomatoes on hand, try 2 cups of tomato juice.

Detox your brain

Water, but don’t over do it

Drinking water is a wonderful and immediate way to cleanse not just your body, but your gray matter too.  January 2018, Jerry and I went to Mayo Clinic for a full blown physical and I met with an urology specialist.  She recommended drinking 64 ounces of water throughout the day, not 128!

Somewhere along the way, I got it into my head that drinking a gallon of water a day (on a regular basis) was detoxing and healthy.  She assured it was NOT.  What she did say it was doing was flushing my system of good nutrients as well as making me run to the bathroom every 45 minutes.  Duh!

We’ve all heard it before, but… 8 glasses really is all we need.  She also heralded the benefits of B vitamins for memory, mood, and over all brain function.

The Power of Questions

Another wonderful way to detox your mind is by asking yourself empowering questions.  Our thoughts are directed by the questions we ask ourselves.

I started doing this years ago and I truly believe it is the #1 reason I was able to go from being $100,000 in debt, no job, single mom, and mostly deaf to being debt free, having my dream job, married to the love of my life, hearing: 94% restored and being healthier than ever.

I firmly believe my life around because of these 4 questions I’d ask myself every morning (and still do by the way):

  1. What am I grateful for?
  2. What am I looking forward to today?
  3. Who do I love?
  4. Who loves me?

In the evenings, try asking yourself:

  1. What was great about today?
  2. What did I learn?

The Secret Sauce of Success

Start a Gratitude Journal.  Every day jot down something you’re grateful for.  Make it 1 word or 3; make it a paragraph; make it something easy to stick to.  Remember: Repetition (consistency) is the mother of skill.

My friend Susan who writes A Vintage Farmwife shared this at a bridal shower I hosted for my girlfriend Alexis this summer and the positive power of it really struck me.

But I digress, back to the Detox Cabbage Soup…

Variations of Detox Cabbage Soup

Pulling out the Detox Cabbage Soup recipe from the Archives

I’ve posted this recipe before but it bears repeating.  Mom always had some kind of soup going on the stove.  This hardy vegetable soup makes the whole house smell good and if the kids are lucky enough to get a snow day, they can dip into it to take off the winter chill.

This particular fat burning detox Cabbage Soup made a resurgence in the 1980s, but I suspect Cabbage Soup dates much farther back.  There are records of it dating back to World War I.

The army served it to troops to ward off scurvy, not for fighting belly bulge.  Cabbage is high in both vitamin C and fiber; it’s cheap, portable, and tasty.  Need I say more?

New and Improved Fat Burning Cabbage Soup?

The most dramatic thing I changed was turmeric, ground back pepper and a squeeze of lemon to the recipe.  A splash of acid to make your dishes POP!  And turmeric & fresh black ground pepper is the Batman & Robin dynamic duo in the world of antioxidants.

fresh turmeric root and pepper corns

These 2 are excellent for decreasing inflammation when used together.  If you missed my Detoxing Turmeric Tonic post and why turmeric should have its own Super Hero Movie.  Check that post out when you have a chance.

Turmeric doesn’t taste like much, but it will stain anything dark yellow.  So watch out!

This is a great way to kick off a healthier diet than what most of us had during the holidays.  I also like it because there’s something incredibly comforting about having a pot of soup on the stove I can dip into through out the day, guilt-free.

So, what’s on the horizon for 2020?

Firefly Grill and Lakeside Table

Kristie and I recently had a whirlwind of a brainstorming session!  I’m really excited about the collaborations we’re doing.  Without giving too much away, we’re going to be talking to a local farm they’re sourcing a lot of their produce from right now, insights to Chef Niall’s vegetable garden, and a new dessert featuring their famous sweet corn ice cream!

Escoffier Culinary Arts Highlights

This past October, I completed my culinary arts certification with Escoffier School of Culinary Arts.  The best part of the program was doing my externship with the Firefly Grill.

If you want to know how my first week was, check it in this post.  The whole team there has great energy and they were a pleasure to work with!  I miss you Hobart!!!

Going through the Escoffier program, it was easy to make friends with my culinary chef mentors.  They were so accessible!  You’ll see me reference them from time to time in 2020.  I still run ideas by them when I’m testing new recipes.

Thank you for making 2019 the best year yet!

Not only did Lakeside Table triple in subscribers and get several spots on Google’s 1st page (Woot! Woot!), but I’ve gotten so many wonderful emails, comments on the blog, and awesome recipe reviews this year.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Special shout out:  Tom F. you and your daughter totally made my holiday season when I saw you guys at IGA and you told me you were getting ingredients for my Cauliflower Gratin.  Thanks, that was AWESOME!!!
