Keto Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

Even though this high-fat/low-carb smoothie is plant-based, dairy-free, and gluten-free it still delivers tons of rich chocolatey almond flavor.

The sweetness in this sugar-free shake comes from stevia. If you don’t like the taste of stevia, try using 1 tablespoon of Erythritol or 1/2 teaspoon of monk fruit in its place.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk unsweetened
  • 1 scoop of unsweetened chocolate protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon stevia
  • 2 oz strong coffee
  • 5 ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Put everything into the blender.
  2. Blitz until smooth
  3. Enjoy!

Keto Smoothie Variations

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie: Instead of almond butter, try peanut butter.

Almond Joy Keto Smoothie: Switch the almond milk for unsweetened coconut milk and top your smoothie with toasted coconut flakes.

Keto Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie: Replace the almond butter, coffee, and ice with 5 frozen strawberries.

Nut allergy: If nut butter is an issue, keep your keto smoothie high in fat when you switch out the almond butter. Choose a healthy fat to replace it like a 1/2 of an avocado. When you blend a little avocado into a smoothie, it thickens it but you don’t taste it.

Other Low-Carb/Keto Resources

If eating keto is relatively new to you, check out Dave Asprey’s website or Jimmy Moore’s.  Those are two great resources.  In a nutshell, it’s a way of eating that keeps the body in a state of ketosis.  This enables the brain and the body to utilize their own fat stores and dietary fat for fuel.

In essence, you become a “Fat Burning Machine” rather than a “Carbohydrate (Sugar) Burning Machine.”  A huge plus for me has been increased energy, greater mental clarity, weight loss, mood booster, and my #1 favorite: I’m not hungry anymore.

Drinking a keto smoothie like this one or a Bulletproof coffee is a great way to jump further into ketosis first thing in the morning or keep you going in the afternoon.

But let’s face it, on a keto diet there are some things I miss and some things a used to miss.  I used to miss ice cream, but not anymore.  Thank you Dave Asprey for your Get Some Ice Cream.  It was a true lifesaver, especially when I first started.

When I eat low-carb I miss milkshakes a lot.  That’s why I came up with this healthy omega-3 protein-packed ultra-low-carb keto smoothie recipe that gets me going in the morning.
