I’ve always associated Pimento Cheese with Texas. Why? I have no idea, except maybe because my mom used to always make it when I was a little girl and she’s from San Antonio. It wasn’t until Jerry introduced me to peaceful afternoons of watching the Masters on the breathtaking Augusta National Golf Course golf course that I learned Pimento Cheese Sandwiches are one of their long standing traditions.
Recently my mom and I got into the kitchen and played around with making a batch of pimento cheese… ok, ok… we made 3 batches. Our family LOVES Pimento Cheese Sandwiches. And her recipe is the BEST! Check out the video above! ????
Click below if you want my FREE Golfer’s Guide to the 19th Hole recipe download. It’s a compilation of some of our favorite recipes we like to snack on while watching the Masters. You’ll find recipes for Pimento Cheese Sandwiches, Egg Salad Sandwiches, Fried Pimento Cheese Balls, Homemade Moon Pies, Veggie Bruschetta, Sweet “Tee”, 5 Second Lemonade, Arnold Palmers and John Dalys! I created this Golfers Guide to the 19th Hole because whipping up some snacks should be as relaxing and enjoyable as watching the game itself.
My husband, Jerry, loves to enjoy a Sunday morning round of golf. Many of you avid golfers may recognize these pictures from Augusta. During the Masters, cell phones and any other recording devices are strictly prohibited. Jerry’s been fortunate enough to have played Augusta. Lucky guy has even been to the Masters (as a spectator, or “Patron” as enthusiasts are kindly referred to there).
Where they traditionally serve pimento cheese and egg salad sandwiches! They wrap them in green tissue paper so if anyone accidentally drops the paper, it won’t show on camera. Very clever! This year I’m making both Pimento Cheese Sandwiches and Egg Salad Sandwiches (pictured below in green paper), along with Fried Pimento Cheese Balls.
First time I had Fried Pimento Cheese Balls was when my dear friend Lisa and I went to Nashville to visit her daughter Alexis. I bit into one and thought I’d died and gone to heaven! I knew I had to make them and the recipe is in my newest freebie A Golfer’s Guide to the 19th Hole (download below).
Recipes in A Golfer’s Guide to the 19th Hole
As you may already know, the 19th hole on a golf course is the affectionate term for a golf course’s clubhouse bar and dining area. For those of us not so fortunate to enjoy the 19th hole at Augusta this year, I’ve put together gathered these recipes into this free download. Here’s what you’ll find in it:
- FRIED PIMENTO CHEESE BALLS
- GOLF CLUB-WICHES (PIMENTO CHEESE & EGG SALAD)
- VEGGIE BRUSCETTA
- HOMEMADE MOONPIES
- SWEET “TEE”
- 5 SECOND LEMONADE
- ARNOLD PALMERS
- JOHN DALYS
- AZALEA COCKTAIL
The real trick to making a great pimento cheese spread is the Tabasco and the Beau Monde seasoning. This is a spice blend by Spice Islands, but if you don’t have it on hand it’s easy enough to whip up. The little recipe below is close and it makes a fair amount so you’ll have plenty on hand. It’s also great in scrambled eggs, chicken salad, and egg salad.
How to Make Your Own Beau Monde Seasoning Blend
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground bay leaf
- 1 tablespoon ground allspice
- 1 tablespoon ground pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon ground celery seed
Put everything in a small blender or mini food processor and pulse until everything is powder and thoroughly mixed.
Don’t have all these spices on hand? Yeah, well me neither… most of the time. Don’t worry here’s the hack I use a lot and it works great! (Combine equal parts garlic powder, salt, and celery seed and use that in place of the Beau Monde. Shhh… I won’t tell if you won’t!????)
What to Expect at the Masters
First and foremost, everything at the Masters is geared towards giving the Patrons (spectators) the best and most civilized experience possible. Should you ever be fortunate enough to experience this event, here are a few things you should keep in mind.
- Cell phones, beepers, bags, backpacks, and purses are all prohibited as are ladders, signs, and banners. Alcoholic beverages are also not allowed. For a complete list head over to Augusta’s Do’s and Don’ts. This is a very helpful site.
- Do bring binoculars, skin protections, and comfortable walking shoes. If you follow a player you may end up walking close to 7 miles! Also keep in mind, this is a hilly course. Early in the morning the dew makes the grass very slippery.
- Food & Drink – Unlike all other professional sports, Augusta offers their guests snacks and beverages at a very hospitable prices. Sandwiches: $1.50 – $3.00; Soda/Ice Tea: $2.00; Beer: $4.00-$5.00; Coffee: $1.50.
- Autographs – Asking for an autograph is only allowed on the Washington Road side of the clubhouse. The best spots are along the rope where the players enter and exit. Remember not to bother the golfers on the course and if you do get a chance to ask for an autograph, be polite.
When I heard they had Moon Pies at the Masters, I used that as an excuse to make some for my Golfer’s Guide to the 19th Hole. I love Moon Pies. I don’t care that they are drier than a box of saltines in the Sahara. They’re awesome and I eat them with my coffee. So if they really do serve them up at the Masters, please somebody leave a comment below and let me know. Until then, get your fingers sticky with these homemade Moon Pies.
Why do golfers call out “FORE!”
Here’s a little tidbit trivia to share with friends while watching the Masters this year. Why do golfers call out “FORE”? The proper name for a caddie who walks ahead to spot the ball was called a forecaddie. They used to call “forecaddie!”, which was shorten to “Fore!”.
What to Make for a Golf Party
If you’re wondering what tasty treats to make while watching the Masters from your own 19th hole, let me suggest a plate of egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches on white bread (also a Masters’ must), an Arnold Palmer made with some sweet tea & 5 second lemonade, or maybe add a splash of vodka and make it a John Daly. But most importantly kick back, relax and enjoy a weekend watching the Pros play on the lush green hills of Augusta. By the way, this year the Masters is being played on April 6,7 & 8.
